Whether you’re looking for a workout boost, or to overcome flashbacks of traumatising P.E lessons, we’ve got your back. Here’s some quick tips for improving your enjoyment and ability when being active. It’s time to get your groove back!
Tune it right:
Music makes everything better, including your workout! According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the right tune can make coordinating your exercise much easier. Choose your feel-good hits to match the type of exercise you are doing. You can even find out how many beats per minute are in your playlist by visiting sites such as ‘Song BPM’. If you’re into building strength, aim for 115 bpm. For cardio work, towards 120 bpm or more. Don’t forget to stretch, with a slowed down tempo, as stretching is good for a happy and relaxed mind.
Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that positive faces and words helped athletes to push harder and take longer to become exhausted. Try attending a class with an encouraging instructor, or listening to a happy-app to get you through ‘the wall’. The ‘Couch to 5k’ app allows you to choose a celeb narrator to cheer you on along the way, plus you can still listen to your tempo-ready music in the background! If possible, working out with a friend who always makes you smile is also a great way to increase your ability.
If you’re romantically involved with someone, choosing active dates can help you to form healthy habits. The Nature Communications Journal says that exercise is contagious and having people close to you who are active will help you to do the same. Go for a walk, take a group bowling, or embrace your inner child at a trampoline park - the possibilities are endless! Research has found that people are five times more likely to exercise if their spouse does! Plus, if you’re married, there’s even more scope for mutual physical activity *wink wink*… We’ll say no more.
While trying to beat your own personal best (PB) can be exhilarating at first, the one-man competition can get old after a while. Plus, during an ‘off week’, it can feel demoralising watching the digits drop. Try rallying a group of friends who feel up for a challenge and start some friendly competition and number matching. Whether it’s minutes on the clock, weights on the bar or portions of fruit and veg, sharing progress via text or in person can help you to do your best. Why not text a friend who you know wants to change a habit, and work on it together. Just remember to be considerate, and read the room!
